Consignment shops
In short
A consignment shop pays each consignor a share of an item once it sells, holds the money until a return can't come back, pays on a set day, and hands back what didn't sell. Here's how that deal reads in VendorDue, and a month in one shop.
The deal, as most consignment shops have it#
A consignor brings in their goods. You price them, list them, and sell them. When an item sells, the consignor gets their share, but not straight away: you wait until the customer can no longer return it. Once a month you pay everyone what cleared. Anything still unsold after a set time goes back to the consignor, or is donated, as your agreement says.
Every part of that is one of your Shop-wide terms The rate, schedule, holds and agreement every vendor follows, unless they have their own. In the glossary in VendorDue:
| Your deal | In VendorDue |
|---|---|
| The consignor gets 60% of each sale | Consignor rate: 60% of Revenue What the customer paid for the item, less discounts and tax. In the glossary |
| Or you keep a set amount of each item | Consignor rate: You keep a fixed amount |
| Wait until the return period is over | Holds: hold each sale until it ships, then a 14-day Return window Days a sale waits after it ships, is delivered or sells, so a return comes off before you pay. In the glossary |
| Pay once a month | Schedule: every month on the 1st |
| Items stay 90 days, then go back | Agreement: 90 days, then ask you |
| The paper consignors sign | Written agreement |
You set these once in Store setup, or in Settings, then Terms, and every consignor follows them unless you give someone their own. See How terms work.
Consignors are vendors#
In VendorDue, a consignor is a vendor. Each one needs their name in the Vendor field of their products in Shopify. That's how a sale knows whose it is, so set it when you list an item. See Set up your vendors.
Sales at the counter through Shopify's point of sale are orders like any other, and VendorDue reads them the same way.
A month in the shop#
Corran Row Vintage consigns clothing. Their deal is different from the shop's: you keep $30.00 of every item and they get the rest, paid every month on the 7th.
| Price | $95.00 |
|---|---|
| You keep | $30.00 |
| Corran Row Vintage's share | $65.00 |
- The jacket sells on 10 September at the counter. VendorDue works out Corran Row's $65.00 straight away, and it's On hold while the return window runs.
- A dress sells online on 12 September, and the customer returns it on the 20th. The refund comes off before anything was paid: Corran Row never sees it on a payout as money they had.
- On 7 October, Corran Row's payout lands with the jacket and everything else that cleared. You pay it and record it.
- Their agreement reaches 90 days. Fourteen days before, you're asked whether to renew it. Their items over 90 days are listed on their page, so you can call them about a pickup.
- They collect five unsold items. You mark each one Picked up on their page, which tells both of you what happened to it. Marking changes nothing in Shopify.
What consignment shops ask#
- Can each consignor have a different split?
- Yes. Most follow the shop-wide consignor rate, and anyone different gets their own in Vendor setup. More
- What happens to an item that sells after the agreement ended?
- VendorDue asks you first, in Needs attention: count it for them, or keep it for the store. Nothing is paid until you answer. More
- Can I pay a consignor before their pay day?
- Yes. Pay now on their row in Upcoming lands their payout today with everything that has cleared. More
- Do consignors see what's still in the store?
- Yes, once you invite them to their page. Their agreement page shows their items still in the store, oldest first, and how long each has been there. More
